Quick Thoughts: The band most visible band member is lead vocalist and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong.  The band's name derived from their fondness for marijuana.  Having sold over 75 million albums worldwide, they are one of the world's best selling groups of all-time.  The song is named after the city of Longview, Washington, where it was first performed in 1992.  The music video for Long View received heavy airplay on MTV and is largely credited for breaking Green Day into mainstream popularity. Bassist Mike Dirnt has stated that the famous bass line intro to this song was written one night while he was high on LSD.

Rock Survey - Small Town (John Mellencamp)

Quick Thoughts: After releasing this song, John Mellencamp became known as the champion of "small town America".  The song refers to his experiences in Seymour and Bloomington, Indiana.  A great song with a simple and heartfelt sentiment.  On a couple of related notes, for reasons that I am unaware of, Small Town is played after every Green Bay Packers game.  Larry Bird played used this song at his retirement ceremony.

Quick Thoughts:  Lenny is undoubtedly a star, and he's been around stars all his life.  His mother is Roxie Roker, an actress known for her character in the 1970s hit television sitcom The Jeffersons.  She is also the cousin of Al Roker.   Lenny's father was also a jazz promoter, was friends with Duke Ellington, Sarah Vaughan, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Bobby Short, Miles Davis and other jazz greats.  This song earned Kravitz a Grammy in 1999 for Best Male Rock Performance.

Quick Thoughts: Found on the B side to the band's first single,"More Than A Feeling", "Smokin" is just plain good old hard rock.  I like the way the organ is incorporated into this song. Probably would like this song even more if I was a pot-head.

Quick Thoughts:  Queensryche is one of three flagship "Progressive Rock" bands.  As a sub-genre of metal, Progressive rock blended heavy metal and progressive rock music, taking the loud "aggression", amplified electric guitar-driven sound of the former, with the more experimental, complex and "pseudo-classical" compositions of the latter.  A pretty awesome rock ballad with a nice orchestral background, that sorta makes me think of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" during some of its swaying vocals.

Quick Thoughts:  British rock band that rose to worldwide fame in the 1970s as a prominent glam rock act.  Love this song!  A nice little metaphor with refreshingly distinctive vocals.

Quick Thoughts:  Named after a prostitute who allegedly mutilated and decapitated her clients, Molly Hatchett was formed in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1975.  This song has awesome guitar throughout, especially the guitar solo that begins near the 3rd minute.  At one point, Warner Brothers' A&R could not decide whether to sign Molly Hatchet or another promising band they had been working with at that same time. They ended up being turned down by Warner Brothers and would later discover that the competing band was none other than Van Halen.

Quick Thoughts:  The first of many songs to come on this rock survey.  Released in 1971, the band is only known to have played this song live once, at Copenhagen on their 1971 European tour.  The title came from the fact that drummer John Bonham played with two sets of two drumsticks.

Quick Thoughts: Not as played as other Doors songs.  This song was originally Bertolt Brecht's Hauspostille (1927),set to music by Kurt Weill for the 1927 "Songspiel" Mahagonny and used in Weill's and Brecht's 1930 opera Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, Lotte Lenya (Weill's wife first recorded the song).  Check out this video of a Lotte Lenya's performance:

Quick Thoughts: In several area codes, 867-5309 has been listed on eBay for sale, possibly allowing them to avoid the general rule amongst wireline phone companies that phone numbers are the property of the carrier and may not be sold.  A common misconception is that Tommy Tutone is the name of the lead singer; it is actually the name of the band. Tommy Heath is the lead singer.

Quick Thoughts: How could a band formed in 1962 still be going strong?  If you ask American music critic Robert Palmer, their "remarkable endurance" stems from being "rooted in traditional verities, in rhythm-and-blues and soul music" while "more ephemeral pop fashions have come and gone". With lyrics by Jagger on a guitar riff by Keith Richards, Shattered is full of crazy raw energy.  Jagger said he wrote the lyrics in the back of a cab. Part of it played in Weird Al's Hot Rocks Polka.

Quick Thoughts:  #1 Album rock song of 1994, featuring guitar with a slight distortion. Having originated in Georgia, Collective Soul performed at Woodstock in 1994, at the time riding the wave of the emerging and maturing grunge scene. The band's name is taken from a line in Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead.  Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins hates this song

Quick Thoughts: "That little ole' band from Texas", formed in 1969 in Houston. This is the only rock n' roll group with its original members still onboard after three decades, with guitarist and lead vocalist Billy Gibbons, bassist and co-lead vocalist Dusty Hill, and drummer Frank Beard.  Great guitar.  Blues-based boogie rock, strong blues roots and known for humorous lyrics.  This song is also sung by Brad Paisley.

Quick Thoughts: A Sacramento band. Signs is a song originally recorded in the 1970 about social and political change, and its lyrics carry themes of intolerance and exclusion.  Tesla came about in 1985 with a workmanlike approach to hard rock.  Their music is not only hard, it also features great acoustic versions of their songs.  With the grunge scene causing major shifts in the music industry in the early 1990's, many pop metal bands were been pushed out of the spotlight.  Tesla's real talent allowed it to remain together as a high respectable band.

Quick Thoughts: A British rock group built around a fusion of rock and classical music, releasing 11 studio albums between 1971 and 1986. Creative dominant force Jeff Lynne has produced recordings for artists such as The Beatles, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Brian Wilson, Randy Newman, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty. The lyric "there's a hole in my head where the rain comes in" is a tribute to The Beatles' song "Fixing a Hole".  Cool song about a guy fed up with a girl who had used him for long enough.

Quick Thoughts: Along with bands like Journey, REO Speedwagon and Styx, Foreigner was one of the rock acts from the 1970's that was able to transform and survive in the 1980's. Before their cheezy 80's ballads as a quartet (which I must admit I still liked), these guys rocked as a sextet.  What a great rock song, great guitar, and just great feel good music!

Quick Thoughts:  Having created the band in Aberdeen, WA, Nirvana unintentionally brought punk, post-punk and indie rock in the mainstream, cemented is influence on rock music forever.  The best description I've heard of Nirvana's sound is "fiery and melodic".  I read someone say that this song is an 'F.U.' for all the people analyzing his songs. The "apology" is meant to be sarcastic, throwing in deliberately nonsensical phrases and words, as if to say "Why do you see me as a role model and take my words this seriously?"

Rock Survey - Baby I Love You Way (Peter Frampton)

Quick Thoughts:  A staple of classic-rock radio.  Peter Frampton is one of those musical prodigies that taught himself to play guitar and piano at the age of seven and was learning classical music by time he was eight.  Here's a guy who paid his dues during his childhood and teenage years for more than a decade before hitting super stardom in the mid 1970's with the best selling live album Frampton Comes Alive of all time (up until that time).  Due to it's wild success, his subsequent efforts were overshadowed by his live album and his career gradually seemed to drift away before making a comeback in the mid 1980's. He's been touring ever since.  Relative to other rock legends, Peter Frampton is under-rated.

Having grown up listening to mostly hip-hop, R&B, some alternative, and all sorts of music in Spanish, I decided it was time to give myself a personal survey of Rock music.  My friend BJ Swanner compiled a "Top 1000 Rock Song List", aggregated from several "Top Lists".  As I go through all 1,000 songs, I'll be creating my own list, sharing a brief post like this for all the songs that will make my final list.   I will not be ranking the songs that make it to my final list.....for now.
