I gathered a few friends to see Ozzy Osbourne reunited with Black Sabbath yesterday at the Verizon Amphitheater in Irvine. When asked to describe the experience, the following comes to mind: burned trashbins, burned t-shirts, skyrocket
fireworks launched from the crowd, water bottles flying around here and there,
moshpits, one dude being restrained, another dude throwing up and then laying out
in the back, and a sprinkling of a few more bodies passed out afterwards on the lawn. This was an experience!...to say the least.
The Production:
This was my first time at the Verizon Amphitheater and let me just say that the parking is pretty bad and the exiting of the venue after the concert is very poorly planned. The lawn area is definitely where you want to be if you're open to some shenanigans, which for a Black Sabbath concert, is part of the experience. The sound
system was adequate but the lighting and the design of the stage was extremely well done.
The Performance: Black Sabbath has been around for more than 40 years and Ozzy's relationship with the band has pretty much been on and off since 1977, when he first quit the band. At 64 years of age, I was impressed with Ozzy's stamina, as he performed for approximately two hours without an intermission, all while consistently engaging with the crowd. At times, he'd even dunk his head into a water bucket and then throw buckets of water into the crowd. Not as crazy as biting the head off a live bat, but enough to rile up his followers. His only rest came when drummer Bill Ward rocked the crowd with the best drum solo I've ever seen. What made the drum solo more impressive was the fact that it came after one solid hour of performing with Ward showing no signs of fatigue. What made the drum solo more electrifying was the strobe lighting effect that accompanied the most rapid parts of the set. I'm not sure if I can say the same for Osbourne, but Bill Ward has apparently been sober for approximately 30 years and is still quite vigorous the drums. Despite Ozzy's energy onstage, his voice isn't what it used to be, and it became increasingly apparent towards the end of the show. But what Black Sabbath provides still, is an atmosphere of lost inhibitions and a certain degree of aggression. Ozzy finished the concert with "Crazy Train", at that point, leaving his fans with a solid concert and a great deal of entertainment.

Rock Blog - Move it on Over (George Thorogood)
Artist: George Thorogood
Song: Move it on Over
Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvarLqTNr1M
Quick Thoughts: An American blues rock vocalist/guitarist from Delaware (he was actually named one of the most influential Delawareans of the past 50 years). George Thorogood was on his way to being a baseball player in his youth when he decided to turn his full attention to music. Though in 1980 Thorogood and the Destroyers toured 50 states in 50 days, his first mainstream exposure came in 1981 while opening for the Rolling Stones on tour. "Move It On Over" was first sung in 1947 by the country music singer-songwriter Hank Williams, a song that is recognized for its influence on early rock n' roll. The song is basically about a guy being sent to the doghouse by his wife for coming home late. Here is a link to the Hank Williams version:

Having grown up listening to mostly hip-hop, R&B, some alternative, and all sorts of music in Spanish, I decided it was time to give myself a personal survey of Rock music. My friend BJ Swanner compiled a "Top 1000 Rock Song List", aggregated from several "Top Lists". As I go through all 1,000 songs, I'll be creating my own list, sharing a brief post like this for all the songs that will make my final list. I will not be ranking the songs that make it to my final list.....for now.

Rock Blog - Long Long Way from Home (Foreigner)
Artist: Foreigner
Song: Long Long Way from Home
Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1XSzwhhF6M
Quick Thoughts: Along with bands like Journey, REO Speedwagon and Styx, Foreigner was one of the rock acts from the 1970's that was able to transform and survive in the 1980's. Before their cheezy 80's ballads as a quartet (which I must admit I still liked), these guys rocked as a sextet. Long Long Way from Home was released in 1977 . The lyrics refer to a person leaving a small town to try and succeed in New York City.

Peter Frampton Concert - August 24, 2013
Had the opportunity to see Peter Frampton yesterday at the Greek Theater.
The Production: This was my first time at the Greek and I really enjoyed the venue. Much more intimate than the Hollywood Bowl and with stadium-style seating it is also more comfortable than sitting on a bench. The sound system seemed a bit off at first, with Frampton's voice not registering completely on the mic. But with each song the sound improved, and more importantly, all of the guitar playing thoughout was an absolute joy.
The Performance: Along with Frampton, it was a treat to see BB King onstage. The concert started with BB King, who spent a majority of his time on-stage introducing his band and making small talk with the audience. He ultimately only sang 3 songs, if that. I felt fortunate to be in his presence, and though I had hoped for more, perhaps I was asking too much of an 87 year old legend. When intermission came, the concert had been underwhelming. The second half really picked up when Frampton started doing his thing on the computer, showcasing his remarkable ability again and again in one song after another. Two major surprises came our way, the first one happening when Dean DeLeo of Stone Temple Pilots came on-stage to perform "Interstate Love Song" while Frampton's son did the lead vocals. The second surprise came when Andy Summer of The Police became part of the show by performing "SOS", with one of Peter's band members doing the lead vocals.

Rock Blog - So This is Love (Van Halen)
Artist: Van Halen
Song: So This Is Love
Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExY0wZ45OSE
Quick Thoughts: An American hard rock band formed in Pasadena, California in 1972, this is the third entry for Van Halen on this rock blog, with the other songs being "Cradle Will Rock" and "Is this Love". "So this is Love" is a rock song with a nice tempo. It was originally written as four separate solos and then combined to make one song. Not the greatest lyrics, but with this being Van Halen, we get some excellent guitar riffs. This song is from their 1981 album Fair Warning.

Rock Survey - Magic Power (Triumph)
Artist: Triumph
Song: Magic Power
Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwvikYBN28E
Quick Thoughts: Due to the resemblance in their sound and lead vocals, Triumph often gets compared with Rush, another popular hard rock band that came into it's own during the 1970's. Triumph was formed by Toronto natives Gil Moore(drums, vocals), Mike Levine, (bass, keyboards), and Rik Emmett (guitar, vocals) in 1975. Magic Power is from their 5th album Allied Forces (1981), which is often considered their best album.

George Thorogood Concert - August 20, 2013
Had the opportunity to see George Thorogood yesterday. I drove out again to the Antelope Valley Fair in
Lancaster, CA., only this time I was driving out there after a workday. I took my friend BJ Swanner and Scott Dickinson, a project manager at my office and a huge fan of rock music. Though Lancaster is a bit far for most people in LA
County, this was an inexpensive option to experience a another rock legend after a long hard work day in Torrance.
The Production: Two screens on both sides of the stage and three screens on-stage showed simple images such as fire and skulls. The sounds system was held up very well, smoothly amplifying the sound of Thorogood's amazingly raspy deep voice, and of course, his electric guitar.
The Performance: The concert started with Buddy Guy (who I need to research further). He sang classic tunes and maintained a casual interaction with the crowd. George Thorogood came on stage afterwards and immediately got to work, inspiring some to dance in the aisles and others to drink and enjoy. Though the concert was smooth and held in a great outdoor venue, nothing about the performance stood out in particular. The songs drawing the loudest response were "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer", "I Drink Alone", "Who Do You Love", "Get a Haircut", and "Bad to the Bone". "Move It On Over" made for a strong finish to a concert and is actually the first song of Thorogood's that I heard as part of my rock survey. Another excellent warm breezy summer night in Lancaster with rock music.

Foreigner Concert - August 17, 2013
Concert: Foreigner
Date: August 17, 2013
Had the opportunity to see Foreigner at the Antelope Valley Fair in Lancaster, CA. Though Lancaster is a bit far for most people in LA County, this was an inexpensive option to experience a band with a deep catalog of strong rock songs. Even more inexpensive is the general admission section, which is free with a $10 ticket to the fair.
The Production: Two screens on either side of the stage showed close-up images of the performers on-stage. The sounds system was slightly distorted during one song but otherwise was consistently adequate. There wasn't much in terms of the lighting effects, but not much was needed. At 52 years of age, Kelly Hansen had enough energy to pump-up the crowd throughout the show.
The Performance: When it comes to energizing the crowd, Kelly Hansen is very effective. At one point he disappeared from the stage only to re-appear walking on chairs within the crowd. Beginning the show with their hit "Double Vision" was a great opening, followed by "Cold as Ice" and "Say You Will". At the mid-point of the show, Hansen left the stage again while each band member performed a solo. This may have been the only lag in the show, which was then immediately revived by their hit song "Jukebox Hero". The encore finished the concert with "I Wanna Know What Love Is" and the highly energetic "Hot Blooded". These guys came to work, being fully engaged and seemed committed to engage the audience during every song. I was fortunate to pay my respects to this band.

Rock Survey - Spread Your Wings (Queen)
Artist: Queen
Song: Spread Your Wings
Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyd6OLyhPJo
Quick Thoughts: Queen is a British rock band formed in London in 1970, originally featuring Freddie Mercury, Brian May, John Deacon and Roger Taylor. Spread Your Wings is a solid rock ballad. Written by Queen bass player John Deacon, this is a fan favorite that was never a hit. Maybe one of their most under-rated songs.

Rock Survey - Love Bites (Def Leppard)
Artist: Def Leppard
Song: Love Bites
Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0T1IVyXBGjM
Quick Thoughts: Def Leppard is an English band formed in 1977 in Sheffield as part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement. How successful has Def Leppard been? Few bands ever get albums as hot as their fourth album Hysteria, released in 1987, featuring seven singles, including Love Bites. Overall, they've sold more than 100 million albums worldwide, and they are one of only five rock bands with two original studio albums selling over 10 million copies in the U.S. This song is Def Leppard's only number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100 to date.

Rock Survey - Margaritaville (Jimmy Buffett)
Artist: Jimmy Buffet
Song: Margaritaville
Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ue2-ZVxpVjc
Quick Thoughts: As an American singer–songwriter, author, actor, and businessman, Jimmy Buffett is a man of many talents. He's also a pilot and often flies his own plane during his concert tours. He's also hard to categorize and is somewhat surprising to find on a rock n' roll survey, since he began as a country artist during the late 1960s. Eventually, his music would incorporate pop music, folk and carribean music for a sound sometimes known as "gulf and western". Margaritaville ranked 234th on the Recording Industry Association of America's list of "Songs of the Century", easily making this Buffett's highest charting solo single. Quite interestingly, "Margaritaville" was actually meant for Elvis Presley, but Elvis died the year that the song was going to be recorded. Buffett got to record it and it became his most career-defining song.

Rock Survey - Money Talks (AC/DC)
Artist: AC/DC
Song: Money Talks
Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmyzFsYEdco
Quick Thoughts:One of the highest grossing bands of all-time, this Australian hard rock band was formed by brothers Malcom and Angus Young in 1973. Nearly twenty years later in 1990, Money Talks was their highest charting single in the United States, at number 23. In fact, it is interesting that despite their remarkable success, no other AC/DC single has even cracked the top 30.

Rock Survey - Fool for the City (Foghat)
Artist:Foghat
Song: Fool for the City
Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ieg6iME8muU
Quick Thoughts: This is yet another British rock band that made rock history, having achieved 8 gold records, one platinum and one double platinum record during the 1970's. With a blues rock sound, Fog Hat offers good feeling rock n' roll, full with electric slide guitar and the type of piano that reminds me of rock from an earlier era. Released in 1975, Fool for the City was part of their first album that went platinum, along with their most famous song Slow Ride.

Rock Survey - Beautiful Day (U2)
Artist: U2
Song: Beautiful Day
Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=co6WMzDOh1o
Quick Thoughts: This Irish band from Dublin has been around since 1976. According to Bono, this song is about losing everything but still finding joy in what one has. "Beautiful Day" was first single released from the album All That You Can't Leave Behind. The song reached number one on the singles charts in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and Ireland, AND, is pretty much on every "best of" song list for rock music.

Rock Survey - Flying High Again (Ozzy Osbourne)
Artist: Ozzy Osbourne
Song: Flying High Again
Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mOzRNfuH7g
Quick Thoughts: A fun feel-good rock song from the album Diary of a Madman, Ozzy's own personal favorite album. Osbourne, who is sometimes referred to as "the Godfather of Heavy Metal", has stated that the song was actually inspired by his successful re-emergence as a solo artist after being fired from the band Black Sabbath, the band with which he had rose to fame in the early 1970's. How successful has Ozzy been since? He and Sharon Osbourne are one of the UK's richest couples. They ranked at number 458 in 2005, with an estimated £100 million earned from recording, touring and TV shows.

Rock Survey - Love is a Battlefield (Pat Benatar)
Artist: Pat Benatar
Song: Love is a Battlefield
Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGVZOLV9SPo
Quick Thoughts: Pat Benatar was one of the most heavily played artists in the early days of MTV and has since won four Grammy awards. With a strong voice and heartfelt lyrics, she deserves a place in rock history. Released in 1983, this song made major splashes in Australia, Europe, and Canada, and of course, in the U.S. The song is written by Mike Chapman, who would go on to later produce a breakthrough album for Blondie.

Rock Survey - Love Walks In (Van Halen)
Artist: Van Halen
Song: Love Walks In
Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYXqb6x50lA
Quick Thoughts: An American hard rock band formed in Pasadena, California in 1972, this is the second entry for Van Halen on this rock blog, with the other song being "Cradle Will Rock". A nice rock ballad, this song was written by Van Halen in 1986 for their seventh album 5150, a reference to Eddie Van Halen's home studio in Studio City, CA., where every album from 1984 onwards was recorded. 5150 is taken from the California Welfare & Institutions code "5150", police radio code for insane".

Rock Survey - Smooth (Santana)
Artist: Santana
Song: Smooth
Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXp413NynFk
Quick Thoughts: Born in Jalisco, Mexico, Carlos Santana learned to play the violin at age five, and the guitar at age eight. He was heavily influenced by Ritchie Valens at a time when there were very few Latinos in American rock and pop music. Having grown up in Tijuana and then California, he witnessed the growing hippie movement centered in San Francisco in the 1960s. Santana went on to perform at Woodstock and would go on to cement his place in rock history. Having written an earlier version based on a friend, Rob Thomas re-wrote the song for his wife, Marisol Maldonado, eventually leading to massive success. The first chart-topping song in Carlos Santana's long-running career. The song stayed in the top ten of the Billboard Top 100 for 30 weeks, a record only broken by "How Do I Live" by LeAnn Rimes. On Billboard magazine's rankings of the top songs of the first 50 years of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, "Smooth" was ranked as the number-two song overall (behind only "The Twist") and the number-one rock song in the history of the chart.

Artist: Grand Funk
Song: Some Kind of Wonderful
Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTuIXtXUEw4
Quick Thoughts: An American blues rock band from Flint, Michigan that was popular during the 1970s, though it appears that critics hated them while audiences loved them. Rock Survey - Armaggedon It (Def Leppard)
Artist: Def Leppard
Song: Armaggedon It
Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jTGVx2ATLI
Quick Thoughts: Def Leppard is an English band formed in 1977 in Sheffield as part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement. How successful has Def Leppard been? Few bands ever get albums as hot as their fourth album Hysteria, released in 1987, featuring seven singles, including Armageddon It. Overall, they've sold more than 100 million albums worldwide, and they are one of only five rock bands with two original studio albums selling over 10 million copies in the U.S. The song features an excellent guitar solo. On the recorded version (and during the Hysteria tour), the solo is preceded by Joe Elliot's call to Steve Clark "C'mon Steve, get it". Following Clark's death in 1991, this line was either replaced by "C'mon, boys" or simply removed during concerts. In 2007 Clark was ranked #11 on Classic Rock Magazine's "100 Wildest Guitar Heroes". Tesla, who opened for Def Leppard on the Hysteria tour, recorded a tribute to Steve Clark on their Psychotic Supper album, called "Song & Emotion (To Our Friend, Steve 'Steamin' Clark)".

ZZ Top Concert - August 1, 2013
Concert: ZZ Top
Date: August 1, 2013
Had the opportunity to see ZZ Top with my friend BJ Swanner at the OC County Fair last night. Not a single empty seat in the house for the "little band from Texas", as ZZ Top played songs from a career spanning over four decades.
The Production: Two screens on stage played various complimentary images, mainly from what seemed to be their own music video footage. At one point, an animated bug danced to music. There wasn't much in terms of the lighting effects, but not much was needed. The drum set had a tough look, featuring large metal skulls out in front. Something that stood out to me was their wardrobe, which consisted of cowboy boots, jackets with glittery embroidery, and of course, their long beards and shades. I'd be interested to know where they draw their sense of fashion, as it seems to carry various influences.
The Performance: When interacting with the crowd, lighting a cigarette on stage and on another point making a reference to the "Hollywood farmers" drew loud reactions (a nod to local marijuana use). Of course, "Sharp Dressed Man", "She's got Legs" and "Tush" all received loud cheers, as did covers of Elvis' "Jailhouse Rock" and Jimi Hendrix's "Foxy Lady". These guys don't need much in terms of effects. With a level of guitar that easily justifies tickets at $45, I was fortunate to pay my respects to this band.
